The Cabinet today approved transfer of two acres of land belonging to city-based IARI, the cradle of Green Revolution in the country, to the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) on lease basis for 99 years to establish additional facilities.
VCI is a statutory body that regulates veterinary practices and education across India. It is located at Bhikaji Cama place in the national capital in an area of 361 sq meters taken on lease from Housing and Urban Development Corporation. VCI has sought more space to expand its activities.
"The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal for transfer of two acres of land from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi to the VCI on lease basis for a period of 99 years," an official statement said.
The IARI land will be transfered to VCI for a period of 99 years at total lease rent of Rs 8,01,278 at Rs one per sq meters per year, it said.
After establishing the facilities, VCI will start short-term courses for in-service veterinary professionals to upgrade their skills on latest research areas of animal sciences.
The benefits will be passed on to rural population which will spur economic growth and employment generation, the statement added.
IARI has sufficient land and transfer of two acres to VCI will not affect its research and field experiments. This will help VCI run its activities in a comprehensive manner, the Agriculture Ministry informed the Cabinet.
IARI has a total 1,200 acres of land in Todapur village, of which 750 acres is farm land.
