The CBDT has refused to share with the CBI any details pertaining to its probe against meat exporter Moin Akhtar Qureshi, who is being investigated for alleged tax evasion.
In a missive to CBI, Central Board of Direct Taxes has said it would not like to share any details about the case with the agency "as of now", according to official sources.
They said the matter was discussed at the top levels of the Finance Ministry.
After reports of alleged links of former CBI Director A P Singh with Qureshi surfaced, CBI had, last month, written to CBDT Chairman R K Tiwari seeking evidence, if any, against any former CBI officials in this connection.
Singh has termed his relations with Qureshi as purely personal and has denied any wrong doing as alleged in the reports.
The CBDT is of the view that if there is any criminality in the case, the matter could be handled by the Enforcement Directorate, the sources said.
The tax sleuths had roped in Enforcement Directorate as well to probe alleged money laundering in the case by Qureshi, who had to resign as president of old boys' society of Doon school recently after the controversy broke out.
CBI did not offer any comments on the development.
Efforts to seek a reaction from Qureshi did not fructify and he also did not reply to messages sent on his mobile.
A Doon school alumnus, 57-year-old Qureshi has been under IT department lens for several months now for alleged tax evasion as tax sleuths claimed that the turnover of his companies was 'under-reported'.
