Twelve people, including six policemen, were injured in brick-batting by a group of locals protesting against damage to a mosque in a freak accident.
Six persons have been arrested and police sub-inspector Alok Misra, who was on traffic duty, was placed under suspension, Superintendent of Police K B Singh said today.
He said FIR has been lodged against 200 others, including 38 named, for last night's brick-batting and arson.
Giving details, Misra said a bus accidentally rammed into the mosque in Dilazak locality, damaging its balcony and pillar.
Enraged over the incident, a group of people blocked roads in the area and torched the bus.
As police reinforcement was rushed from different police station areas to control the situation, the protestors indulged in brick batting resulting in injuries to several persons, including six policemen, the SP said.
Senior officials, including DIG Ashutosh Kumar, rushed to the spot with additional force and normalcy was restored late in the night, he said.
The situation was now normal but forces have been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.
The bus was being taken to the Police Lines after the Traffic SI had challaned it and a home guard was driving it when it hit the mosque in Sadar Bazar police station area leading to the trouble.
A case has been lodged against the homegurard, the SP added.
