Areas around the historic Jamia Masjid here today saw clashes between stone-pelting mobs and police with even flags of Pakistan and terror groups like ISIS and LeT being displayed by some people.

As soon as the Friday prayers ended at the mosque, a group of youth carrying controversial flags and banners marched towards and main road at Nowhatta in old city, police said.

The flags included that of Pakistan and ISIS and LeT militant outfits, police said. Photographs of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani were also displayed during the protests. A flag resembling that of the RSS was set ablaze.

Police used batons and fired tear smoke shells to chase away the protestors. There were no reports of any injuries.

Meanwhile, a group of youth offered funeral prayers in absentia at Nowhatta for Lashkar-e-Taiba's top commander Abu Qasim, a Pakistani national, who was killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam yesterday.

Minor stone-pelting incidents were also reported from Tral town in south Kashmir's Pulwama district.

Rest of the valley remained peaceful.
