The Jammu and Kashmir government today proposed a probe by a House Committee of the Legislative Council into the 2009 Mubarak Mandi fire incident.
The matter was raised during Question Hour when Minister for Youth Services and Sports Imran Ansari was replying to a question of Congress legislator Rani Gargi Blowria.
Ruling BJP and PDP legislators accused the then National Conference-Congress government of hatching a conspiracy as regards the fire incident on February 9, 2009 at the heritage Mubarak Mandi complex which formerly served as the Secretariat of Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh.
These (Dogra rulers) are the leaders who gave us identity, the BJP legislators said, demanding an inquiry by a House Committee into the "sensitive" matter to "bring out the truth".
It should also be ascertained if items from the Toshakhana (treasure house) were shifted before or after the incident, BJP legislator Ashok Khujuria said.
The PDP lawmakers also stood in support of the demand of their ally.
Ansari said as no inquiry was conducted into the incident, let a House Committee be formed to look into it.
Earlier, the minister informed the House that 26 items of Royal Dogra Toshakhana were shifted from Mubarak Mandi to Civil Secretariat in Jammu in 2006 after the devastating fire in Rani Charki Mahal.
He said Mubarak Mandi complex is a state-protected monument and steps have been taken for its restoration and preservation.
