CPI and CPI(M) today held a protest here against rise in prices of essential commodities including LPG, petrol, "deteriorating" law and order situation, and other "anti-people" policies of the state government.
The protesters gathered near Ludhiana railway station and then marched to Clock Tower Chowk.
Addressing the gathering, CPI and CPM leaders slammed the state government for "imposing higher taxes on petrol" in Punjab, and forcing people to pay higher price for it as compared to rates prevailing in neighbouring states.
The protesters also lambasted the state government for imposing taxes to the tune of Rs 9,000 crore on public in the form of property tax, increase in bus fare, and hike in registration of vehicle rates.
They also criticised the government for the alleged delay in disbursement of salaries and pension of employees and ex-employees. They voiced concern over delay in disbursement of LPG subsidy in beneficiaries accounts.
The protesters also claimed the law and order situation under the SAD-BJP regime in Punjab had reached the lowest ebb in the recent period. All sections of the people particularly women now feel unsafe, they said.
