The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday demanded that the government convene an all-party meeting on electoral reforms in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern on the issue.

"If Prime Minister is serious about the electoral reforms, he should convene an all party meeting. The Election Commission should be asked to initiate the process simultaneously. There should be a time frame for this entire process," CPI General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy said in a statement.

Modi's statement at Kozhikode in Kerala on electoral reforms is timely, he said.

Noting that the CPI and other Left parties have been demanding immediate electoral reforms, he said, "Proportional representation system is the most important reform that India needs."

The money power in the elections should be controlled, he added.

Pitching for electoral reforms, Modi on Sunday said that time had come to hold a wide consultations to see how the system can be improved in the context of role of money and holding of simultaneous polls.

He made these suggestions in his valedictory address to the BJP's National Council at Kozhikode.
