A CPI(M) councillor of the Agartala Municipal Corporation has gone missing this morning and was found injured and unconscious after around 12 hours, police said.

The 55-year-old councillor was not seen from around 7 am at his home in Joynagar locality here and was recovered near Battala crematorium, about a kilometre from his house, at 6:45 pm.

Local people identified him and brought him to his home after identifying him, his wife Banasri Chakraborty told reporters.

She claimed that her husband was found in a 'badly injured' condition, though Officer-in-charge of West Agartala police station, Subrata Chakraborty, said the councillor's injuries were minor in nature.

The CPI(M) leader was taken to hospital for first aid and was brought back home.

His family had filed a missing diary with the police in the morning.

It is yet to be clear how the incident took place.

CPI(M) spokesperson Goutam Das ruled out the possibility of involvement of any political party in the incident.

"We had heard that he left home and was not seen since the morning. It doesn't seem there is any political motive in the incident so far," Das said.

The BJP-Indigenous People's Front of Tripura coalition swept to power in Tripura by securing 44 seats in the 60-member Assembly in last month, replacing the 25-year-old CPI(M) led Left Front government.

However, the Agartala Municipal Corporation is run by the Left Front.
