In an effort to curb flow of black money in the run up to Lok Sabha polls, Delhi Election Commission today directed Income Tax department to keep vigil on movement of cash exceeding Rs 10 lakh through city airports.
"Income Tax Department has been asked to open Air Intelligence Unit at Delhi airports and keep vigil on movement of cash. If any cash exceeding Rs 10 lakh is found, the unit is instructed to take action besides informing my office," said Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Dev.
Dev today held a meeting with officials from Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and Income Tax department to discuss ways to check flow of black money during the campaigning.
"All Airports, railway stations, Hotels, Farm Houses, Hawala agents, financial brokers, cash couriers, pawn brokers and other suspicious agencies which are likely to be used for the movement of undisclosed cash during election process shall be kept under close surveillance," Dev told reporters.
"Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) has been asked to open 24x7 Control Room and Complaint Monitoring Cell with a Toll Free Number regarding movement of large sums of cash or other items suspected to be used for bribing of electors," he added.
Besides that, banks have been asked to report Income Tax department all cash withdrawal in excess of Rs 10 Lakh by any person.
