Deepavali was celebrated with traditional fervour in Tamil Nadu today with the rain, witnessed in the past few days in several parts of the state, abating on time.
Keeping with tradition, people woke up early in the morning, wore new clothes, burst crackers and exchanged sweets with friends and neighbours.
Multiplexes and cinema halls were teeming with people as new films of top stars were released today for Deepavali. Kamal Haasan starrer "Thoongaa Vanaam," and Ajith Kumar's "Vethalam" released today to packed halls.
Rain began subsiding yesterday evening after the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal crossed the north Tamil Nadu coast near Cuddalore.
With showers stopping last night, the celebrations began. However, the showers in the past few days played spoil sport with the shoppers.
Fire and Rescue officials said a few minor fire mishaps related to bursting of crackers were reported from areas including Ramapuram and Kodungaiyur here.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa sent a bouquet and greetings to Governor K Rosaiah on the occasion of the festival. "I have great pleasure in conveying my best wishes and greetings to you, your wife and all the members of your family for a joyous and sparkling Deepavali. On this auspicious occasion, may the glow of the Festival of Lights usher in peace, prosperity and good health," she said.
Thanking her, Rosaiah reciprocated the gesture.
