Expressing concern over incidents targeting women and elderly people, Delhi BJP today demanded better security for women and senior citizens in the national capital.
A delegation led by Delhi BJP state chief Vijay Goel submitted a memorandum in this regard to police Commissioner B S Bassi.
"Senior citizens and women are the most vulnerable sections of society to crime and recent trends of crime in Delhi points to a sad state of affairs in this regard.
"Our leaders urged the Commissioner of Police to take appropriate steps to make senior citizens and women safe in the national capital," a BJP spokesperson said today.
Delhi police Commissioner B S Bassi apprised BJP leaders about the various steps taken by Delhi police to tackle crime in the city.
The Commissioner said that in order to deal with crime against women, the relevant laws have been amended to make them more stringent.
He also stressed the need to educate people about the new set of laws to ensure their safety.
"It also came to fore during the discussion between the delegation and the Commissioner that the communication between the beat level police officials and people are not of the order that it used to be.
"The delegation emphasised on improving communication between police and people," the spokesperson said.
The delegation comprised of former Delhi BJP president Mange Ram Garg, Delhi BJP general secretary Jaiprakash, Amitabh Sinha and Anita Arya.
The Commissioner also told the delegation that Delhi Police was constantly in touch with Delhi government and there is no communication gap between the two.
"This dispels the false propaganda of the Congress government in Delhi. The Delhi Police chief said that relation with the Chief Minister of Delhi continues to be good.
"This is in sharp contrast with the statements made by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who has often complained that the Delhi Police does not pay heed to her concerns," the spokesperson said.
