Sharma, a 1988 batch Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS) officer, has been on deputation for seven years and nine months. She joined the university as finance officer in 2006 and was elevated to the position of Registrar in June 2012.
In January this year, she was granted an extension till the completion of her three years as Registrar till June 2015.
However, the HRD Ministry was not inclined to her continuing as the Registrar following the FYUP row.
"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal for cancelling the extended period of deputation and premature repatriation of Alka Sharma, Registrar, University of Delhi, to her cadre-Ministry of Defence," an official memorandum issued by DoPT said.
"Taking cognizance of the official memorandum, the MHRD has communicated to the University to relieve Sharma from the the position of Registrar," a DU official said.
"Going by the DoPT rules, no government officer is allowed more than seven years of deputation. Sharma, who is at a director-level post, was entitled to five years. Still, she was granted an extension this January," Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) President Nandita Narain said.
The move to repatriate Sharma to her parent cadre has also been welcomed by DUTA.
"DUTA welcomes the recall of the Registrar by her parent department. She had been given extension of her deputation beyond the maximum permissible period of seven years. Her tenure was marked by extreme high-handedness, arrogance and extra-constitutional authority," Narain alleged in a statement.
