DU to renovate toilets for ease of access to disabled students

Delhi University (DU) has decided to renovate the toilets on the campuses of its various colleges keeping in mind the needs of differently-abled students.
"In order to improve the accessibility of the differently- abled students in terms of facilities, the university will renovate the toilets at the various colleges," said an official at DU's Equal Opportunity Cell.
According to DU records, there around 1,250 students with disabilities who are enrolled in different courses under the varsity.
DU had earlier provided infrastructure for differently- abled students by constructing ramps for access to buildings and other facilities.
"Around 30 per cent of DU colleges already have toilets suitable for use by differently-abled students. The rest of them will now be directed to renovate their toilets," he said.

He added that the 20-member committee formed recently for DU's swachhta abhiyan, launched in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Clean India' campaign, will monitor the progress on the renovation of toilets.

The varsity will also approach the relevant government departments with a request for the construction of accessible footpaths for differently-abled students within college campuses, he added.
The DU Equal Opportunity Cell was established in 2006 to address the needs and issues related to physically-challenged, SC/ST, OBC and minority students.
DU allows for a 5 per cent relaxation in eligibility criteria with respect to differently-abled students.
A braille library and an Audio Book Resource Centre are among the facilities introduced by the university for its differently-abled students.
