Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has suspended three of its engineers for poor construction quality of toilets in JJ clusters of the city which were selected as open defecation spots by the Delhi government.
The DUSIB CEO suspended Satish Chand Sharma, executive engineer, Virender Anand, assistant engineer, and Sanjay Gulati, junior engineer, based on a report of Quality Control Unit, a senior government official said.
A vigilance inquiry and initiation of disciplinary action has also been directed against them, he said.
The official said deficiencies in the quality of construction of two toilet complexes at JJ Basti Reshma Camp and Harijan Camp in Kirti Nagar were noticed by the CEO during an inspection.
A quality audit of the work by the Quality Control Unit was given by him. The toilets were inaugurated on April 30 last, he said.
A survey of open defecation spots in the city was done by DUSIB-a Delhi government body, and 234 such places were identified. The gap analysis led to an estimate that about 19,000 toilets were needed to make JJ clusters open defecation free, he said.
Delhi government has provided a budget of Rs 100 crore in addition to Rs 55 crore given under Swachh Bharat Mission by the central government for the purpose.
DUSIB has made a detailed action plan for construction of toilets in all the JJ clusters of the city during the current year. Last year, 4,500 toilets were constructed in the region, the official added.
