Deputy Commissioner, animal husbandry, Government of India C H Sahuka today said that to promote piggery the Centre has drafted various schemes under which, people are given subsidy of up to 50 per cent enabling small farmers to earn more.
He was speaking at the 8th National Livestock Championship and Expo 2015 here.
Sahuka said goat rearing and pig rearing can meet the need of milk and meat, which has a large market in the state but lesser production.
"There is a need to improve the quality of pig breed so that we are able to cater to the national market and supplement our source of income," he said adding that there was great demand for pork in the Northeast states.
