Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today gave his approval for the Rs 1,260.63 expenditure to be incurred for the extension of this vital corridor, which will connect East Delhi and Noida to South Delhi, easing traffic on NH-24 and decongesting Ring Road on Ashram, South Extension and Bhairon Marg.
The bridge across the Yamuna will mark a departure from the conventional ones built on the river, said a senior Delhi government official.
The corridor, of 3.4-km length, will reduce the travel time from Mayur Vihar in East Delhi to AIIMS to 10 minutes.
"Among the salient features of the extension of Barapullah (Phase III) is the bridge over the Yamuna, which is proposed as an iconic bridge.
"The proposed extradosed bridge, with a total length of 550-m, will have only six piers in the river portion with spans as large as 128-m. The reduction in the numbers of piers and their foundations in the river will speed up construction and will facilitate development of the river front in the area," said a senior Delhi government official.
Two cloverleaf intersections will also be provided with the new flyover to ensure signal-free entry and exit from Mayur Vihar. State-of-the-art LED streetlights with solar panels on designer poles shall be provided on the structure.
The project will start in December and the work will be commissioned from March, 2015. The project will be completed by December, 2017.
