Punjab government today announced to raise compensation for families of debt-ridden farmers, who committed suicide, from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh.
"The state has enhanced amount of compensation given to debt-ridden farmers, who have committed suicide, to Rs three lakh from earlier amount of Rs two lakh," an official spokesperson of the agriculture department said.
Besides, the state government also announced to give compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of farmer/labourer who died of snake-bite.
He said Rs two lakh will be given in case of death, Rs 20,000 for severe injuries and Rs 5,000 for treatment of wounds caused due to snake-bites.
To claim the compensation for death due to snake-bite, victim's family has to ensure that postmortem of the body is conducted under the section 174 of the CrPC, he said.
This decision was taken by the government after receiving a lot of fake claims for compensation, the spokesperson said.
