Brahma said this after visiting the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation-run centre at Nampally Sarai here which provides subsidised hot and hygienic meals to poor for Rs 5.
GHMC has partnered with the Hare Krishna Movement-run Akshaya Patra Foundation, which prepares the food, for the purpose.
"Around 35 per cent of the people in the country are Below Poverty Line and most of them live in urban areas. It is very important to care of them.
"GHMC is the only corporation in the country which runs such a programme and fulfils its social responsibility effectively by providing food at such an affordable price," he said, complementing the GHMC for launching the initiative.
