Captured at the Norman Lockyer Observatory in Devon at 02:04 am (local time), the footage shows the "bolide" meteor giving out a large orb of light.
According to Dave Jones at the UK Meteor Observation Network (UKMON), it was by far the largest captured at the Observatory.
The International Astronomical Union defines a fireball as "a meteor brighter than any of the planets" (magnitude -4 or greater).
A West Midlands Police traffic officer saw the fireball while travelling on the M42. It was filmed by the car's on- board CCTV, the BBC reported.
It is reported to have broken into several pieces as it entered the Earth's atmosphere.
