Firm commitment needed to deal with terror: Nepal Dy PM

Nations need to demonstrate firm commitment at the highest level to deal with terrorism, Nepal said today, stressing that with expansion of terror activities in the Asia-Pacific region, countries need to be extra cautious.
Addressing the Counter Terrorism Conference 2017, a three-day conference by India Foundation, Nepal's deputy prime minister Bimalendra Nidhi stressed on the need to formulate counter-terrorism strategies by detecting the occurrence of radicalisation and possible recruitment by foreign terrorist organisations.
He also emphasised on being extra cautious amid exploitation of internet and various social media platforms by terror groups.
"The transnational nature of terrorism should be recognised and countered with national, regional, and global perspective and capabilities," Nidhi, who is also the Home Minister of Nepal, said.

In his remarks, Nidhi stated that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is a serious global threat to humanity and underlined the need to "demonstrate firm commitment at the highest level" to stop terrorist acts and bring perpetrators to justice.
The deputy Prime Minister further stated that as the number of terror outfits and their sophistication and technology grows, threats of terrorist attacks on any given day become all the more possible.

"The activities of larger network of terrorist organisations at global scale and their reported expansion in the Asia Pacific region provides us the reason to be extra vigilant to counter the threats," he said.

He also recalled two separate incidents in 2004 and 2016, in Iraq and Afghanistan that saw killings of 25 Nepali citizens in a terror attack.
"Such heartbreaking acts have victimised thousands of innocent peoples, in one way or the other, within and across the national boundaries," Nidhi said.
The Deputy Prime Minister also shared steps taken by Nepal to meet the security demands including enhancement of security infrastructure and training to security personnel.
Deputy Foreign Minister of Afghanistan also attended the event.
Nidhi had separate meetings with former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh and senior leader NCP leader DP Tripathi.
