Five persons from Tamil Nadu were today arrested for attempting to sell outdated Brazilian currency (cruzado), police said.
Acting on a tip-off, sleuths of Commissioner's Task Force (Central Zone) apprehended the five while they were trying to sell the outdated Brazilian notes in Nampally area here. They seized 2,90,500 cruzados in 500 Denomination, Task Force Deputy Commissioner of Police B Limba Reddy said.
The accused were identified as Y Mani, a stove repairer, A Uma Pathi, an insurance Agent (both from Vellore district), G Karthik, a cable operator, and K Satish Kumar, a car driver (both from Kanchipuram district) and R Chiranjeevi from Thiruvallur district who is into real estate business, police said.
Two more accused, Kumar and Ravi, both from Vellore district, are absconding, they said.
The cruzado was the currency of Brazil from 1986 to 1989. The South American country's official currency since 1994 is the Brazilian real.
Mani, Uma Pathi, Karthik, Chiranjeevi and Satish procured 581 outdated currency notes of Brazil (in 500 denomination) from the absconding accused Kumar and Ravi.
