Ludhiana will soon become the fifth city in the country after the four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata to have its own FM radio channel to be run by the country's public broadcaster Prasar Bharti.
The FM Gold radio channel will be launched by the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari, who is Congress MP from Ludhiana, on August 16.
The FM Gold channel, as it is called, will be available on 100.1 Mega Hertz, a press release said today.
Initially the programmes will be broadcast from the FM Gold New Delhi with local variation. Local programmes will be broadcast for two hours both in morning and evening. These will start in about two months' time.
"This addresses the long pending demand of the people of the Ludhiana city for a local FM radio channel. Interestingly, Ludhiana despite being the largest city in the north, particularly in Punjab did not have any FM radio channel, neither in the private sector nor the public sector.
"It was at the personal initiative of Tewari to get FM Gold radio channel started from Ludhiana within a short span of time," the release said.
A special function is being organised at Guru Nanak Bhawan in Ludhiana on August 16 to mark the occasion which will be presided over by Tewari and attended among others by senior officials from the I&B Ministry and Prasar Bharti.
