Frequent traffic violations by riders and motorists in Hyderabad would lead to automatic suspension of their driving licence (DL) from August 1.
This provision, said to be first such move in the country, has been made by the Hyderabad Traffic Police (HTP) under the 'Penalty Point System' devised by it.
"This road safety improvement system is being introduced for the first time in India to inculcate self- discipline among commuters with a view to transform the city of Hyderabad into a safe place for commuting and driving," Police Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy told reporters today.
Under the initiative, to be launched from August 1, penalty points ranging between one and five would be imposed for different traffic violations under the Motor Vehicles Act.
As per a Government Order (GO) on the subject, at any point of time, if the cumulative tally of the penalty points accrued by a driver exceeds the limit of 12 during the preceding block period of 24 months, his/her DL shall be suspended for one year from the accrual date.
If a person, whose license has been suspended and later revoked after completion of one year period, again accrues 12 penalty points subsequently, DL of such person shall be suspended for two years.
On further repetition of accumulation of 12 points every time, the DL shall be suspended for a period of three years, according to the GO.
"The penalty points will be awarded to the violators with effect from August one," the Hyderabad Police chief said.
Reddy also announced integration of traffic e-challans with M-Wallet app. This will allow commuters to know and pay e-challans through this recently-launched app.
The app consists of transport-related documents in digital form giving commuters freedom of not carrying original documents.
To reach out to more citizens, the Hyderabad Police also announced integration of the Hawk Eye mobile app, which it launched earlier to empower the common man to become 'citizen police', with M-Wallet app.
