Ganga begins receding at few places; rainfall subsides in UP

The Ganga in Uttar Pradesh has begun showing signs of receding at Ballia and Ghazipur even as the other major rivers in the state continued to flow above the danger mark in different areas.
The Ganga was still flowing 2.075m above the red mark at Ballia and .765m above in Ghazipur, but its level had started declining, according to the relief commissioner's office here.
As many as 224 villages and almost 2,73,600 people remain flood-affected in Ballia and in four tehsils of Ghazipur, the relief commissioner said, adding that in Mirzapur, a population of 5,13,304 people in 374 villages had been hit.

A total of 903 villages and a population of 15,99,162 have been listed as being affected by floods in the state, the relief commissioner said.
The Sharda at Palia Kalan, Ghaghra at Turtipar, Budhi Rapti at Kakrahi and Quano at Gonda were still flowing above the red mark.
The Ganga at Kanpur, Ramganga at Moradabad, Yamuna at Agra and Mathura, Betwa at Jhansi, Rapti at Shrawasti, Balrampur and Gorakhpur and Rohin at Mahrarajganj were, however, rising.

The MeT office said light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers occurred at isolated places in the eastern areas while the conditions remained dry in the western parts of the state.

Gorakhpur received 20mm rainfall followed by Domariyaganj with 10mm in overnight showers.
The forecast is for rain and thundershowers at isolated places in eastern UP with the weather tipped to remain dry over the western parts.
