Hundreds of girl students of a local government college today protested against rejection of nominations of two contesting girl candidates for ensuing students' union elections, at GT road here, disrupting the traffic for hours, police said.
Students of Vidhyavati Mukandlal Girls College (VMLGC) blocked the GT road alleging that college principal Kusum Tyagi has "maliciously" rejected the nominations of Vibha Kumari (president candidate) and Khushbu (vice president candidate) on the grounds of "short attendance" during the academic session, they said.
Both the girls had submitted their nomination papers under the panel of former student president of VMLG college Kanchan Bhati whose panal is contesting all the seats of students' union.
Vibha is a gold medallist Netball player and had represented the college in Singapore while Khusboo is a hockey player, students said, adding that they must get exemption in attendance on the grounds of their sports activities.
Meanwhile, college principal Kusum Tyagi said nominations of the contesting students have only been rejected in accordance with JM Lyngdoh Committee report.
"I have sent a report to the university on rejection of nominations for their perusal and final disposal. Elections will be conducted as per schedule," she added.
Upon information of traffic congestion on GT road and other arterial roads, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ran Vijay Singh and City Magistrate Kapil Singh reached the spot and restored the traffic movement after convincing students of justified action.
City Magistrate Kapil Singh said the administration will not tolerate any 'law and order' problems being created by the students of any college on roads and a strict vigil will be maintained by police until student union elections.
Sihani Gate Police Inspector Ashok Shishodia told an FIR under section 345 of IPC (wrongful confinement) for traffic jam on the road has been registered against 150 unidentified college girl students.
Vidyavati Mukand Lal College for Girls is affiliated to CCS University, Meerut. Election for the college students' union is slated for November 21.
