"During the academic session 2016-17, the NCTE had withdrawn recognition of 133 institutions offering various teacher education programmes for not following the guidelines stipulated in the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) Act, rules, norms and standards," Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) Upendra Kushwaha said in his response to a written question.
While no Delhi institute figured in the list, the maximum number of institutions whose recognition was withdrawn were in Karnataka (29) followed by Maharashtra (28), Tamil Nadu (20) and Madhya Pradesh (17).
Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar had then observed that BEd colleges were opening like "fly by night operators".
