Speaking to reporters here, the Union Coal and Power Minister said the Congress, which ruled for a decade, miserably failed to increase the power production capacity due to several unwanted projects based on "illogical" calculations.
Though there was no need to import coal, the previous Congress government purchased imported coal by spending lakhs of crores of rupees, he said.
Replying to a question on farmers' protest in Madhya Pradesh and killing of some farmers, Goyal said it was an unfortunate incident and a judicial inquiry has been ordered.
On demonetisation, the minister said it was the biggest reform that will be written in golden letters in the history of India, adding note ban had crushed all sorts of black money transactions, making the country economically stronger.
Earlier, after offering worship at the Lord Venkateswara shrine at Tirumala with members of his family, Goyal inaugurated an exhibition of Making of Developed India (MODI) at Indira Maidan near Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) office here.
