GRSE launches 4th anti-submarine corvette Kavaratti

Taking another major step towards indigenisation, the fourth anti-submarine warfare corvette was launched from the Garden Reach Ship Builders and Engineers (GRSE) main yard here today.
Designed by the Directorate of Naval Design and built by the GRSE, INS Kavaratti is the last of the four anti-submarine warfare class stealth corvettes being built under Project 28 (P-28).
The vessel has been named after the capital of Union Territory Lakshadweep and was launched by Manita Singh, wife of the Union Minister of State for Defence, Rao Inderjit Singh, who was also present on the occasion besides Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R K Dhowan and Vice Admiral Satish Soni.

Rear Admiral (retd) A K Verma, chairman and managing director GRSE and other dignitaries from the Armed Forces, Ministry of Defence and state administration were present at the event.
The corvette has a displacement of 3,300 tonnes, is 109.1 metres in length and measures 13.7-m at beam. The vessel is propelled by four diesel engines to achieve speed in excess of 25 knots and has an endurance of more than 3,400 nautical miles, a release by the GRSE said.
The hull of the ship is built with Warship Grade high tensile steel, indigenously developed for the first time and it has a common raft mounted gear box and diesel engines, which give the ship very low signature radiated underwater noise, it said.

Kavaratti is well-equipped to fight in nuclear, chemical and biological warfare conditions owing to its weapons and its sensor suite is predominantly indigenous.
GRSE's Engineering Division has manufactured and supplied the Anchor Capstan, Mooring Capstan and hydraulically operated Telescopic Boat Davits for this class of ships.
Further, the Division has also supplied the Rail Less Hello Traversing System being installed for the first time in any Naval ship in the country, the release added.
