Guv appeals to agitating JU students to attend convocation

Describing Jadavpur University convocation as a "sober and solemn occasion", West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi today appealed to agitating students to participate in tomorrow's programme, which they threatened to boycott demanding removal of Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti.
Tripathi, who is also the Chancellor of the University, said that students should participate in the convocation and try to enhance the prestige of the institution instead of boycotting the occasion, which would hurt the reputation of the University.
"It's their wish to attend or not to attend. But they are forgetting one thing that by their action they are sullying the image of the University which is a highly reputable University. They should not do this and that's my appeal to them," Tripathi told reporters here.

"They should not indulge in certain activities and participate in the convocation which is a very sober and very solemn occasion," he added.
According to the Chancellor, students should come out of their agitation mode and participate in the convocation at the JU campus tomorrow morning to enhance the university's reputation.
"They should rather try to advance the prestige of the University by showing unity in participation in the convocation," Tripathi stated.
Students have given a call to boycott the convocation to demand the VC's resignation following police crackdown on protesting students three months ago.
