The Bombay High Court today gave an ultimatum to municipal corporations across Maharashtra to come out with schemes to provide street-side toilets for women.
The division bench of Justices A S Oka and C V Bhadang was hearing a public interest litigation which highlights the lack of toilets/urinals for women in public places, especially the streets.
The High Court had in December directed all municipal corporations to come out with a solution but today the bench was informed that only Mumbai, Nagpur and Amravati corporations had taken some steps in this regard.
Irked, the bench directed the rest of the civic bodies to work out necessary schemes by June 19.
No further extension would be granted to implement the order, the judges said.
The petition has been filed by 'Milun Saryajani', a women's organisation.
Pune Municipal Corporation took various steps for providing toilets facilities for women in the city. Impressed by its success, the HC has sought replication of the model in all cities in Maharashtra.
