Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Devvrat today asked people of the state to promote Hindi as the national and functional language of the country.
The language should be promoted so that it could be a bond to unite the nation. "It is an irony in India that no serious efforts have been made to give due status to Hindi," he said.
The Governor also expressed concern over the injustice being done to Hindi in higher education institutes where priority was being given to foreign languages.
Devvrat presented the Raj Bhasha Puraskar to officers and employees of various departments and corporations at the Raj Bhasha Hindi Samman Samaroh organised by the Art, Language and Culture Department here.
Nations such as Japan and Israel have shown the way to the world by relying on their own languages, he said.
"Hindi is spoken in more than 123 countries and there was need for adopting a practical approach for promoting it, instead of just fulfilling formalities," Devvrat said.
The governor released the annual magazine of the department and gave away prizes to students who won various competitions.
