The probe into the alleged rape of a five-year-old girl in a school in Gandhi Nagar has been transferred to the Crime Branch, police today said.
The development comes after the Delhi government wrote to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal in this regard yesterday.
Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain had received complaints through Gandhi Nagar MLA Anil Bajpai about alleged "inaction" by the authorities concerned.
The minister then wrote to Baijal demanding transfer of the case from local police to the Crime Branch for a fair and transparent probe.
Baijal spoke to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik yesterday. Subsequently, the case was transferred from Shahdara district police to the Crime Branch last night, an officer said on the condition of anonymity.
The girl was allegedly raped by a peon on the premises of a private school in Shahdara here last week. The accused was arrested the same day.
A senior officer of the Crime Branch said the unit will probe whether there were lapses on the school's part.
It will also probe the charge that a teacher asked the girl and her parents not to report the matter to police.
The Delhi government had recently ordered a magisterial probe into the alleged rape of the girl.
Following the rape incident, Patnaik had instructed all district deputy commissioners of police to ensure that schools in their areas have adequate security measures in place.
The instructions had come amid increased concerns over the safety on school premises after the killing of a seven- year-old student in Gurugram's Ryan International School.
