Hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani today supported the Jammu and Kashmir government's move to postpone school examinations to March in the aftermath of the floods but demanded that decision be made permanent.
"Although this decision will waste about seven months of the students, this loss can be compensated by making this decision permanent for the future," a Hurriyat spokesman said.
He said if the March session is not made permanent, it is sheer injustice to postpone the exams and it will not only waste a whole year of thousands of students but in the next year they will not be able to complete their syllabus in view of short duration.
"The conducting of exams in march session is very common outside Jammu and Kashmir and this system was also in practice in the state in the near past but the bureaucracy then changed this system for their personal interests with such a cruel practice of holding exams in the harsh winter of this region," the spokesman said.
He said the existing academic calendar makes students wait for several months before they can get admission in professional courses outside the state.
"Admissions to the professional courses outside the state are usually held in the month of May. So, the desirous students of our state have to wait for many months to get the admission and during this period they have to face many difficulties," he said.
