"The delegation briefed the Governor about the activities of the organisation and the longstanding tradition of processions being taken out on the 8th and 10th Muharram every year," Raj Bhavan spokesman said after the meeting.
"The organisation requested the Governor to help in these processions being allowed to be organised on their traditional routes," the spokesman said, adding, the delegation also sought administration's cooperation in this regard.
The delegation comprised Ittehadul Muslimeen vice president Syed Ibrahim Razvi as also M Hussain Jaffrey, Nazir Ahmad Dar and M Rafiq Kathoo.
This is for the first time a delegation of a Hurriyat constituent has met the Governor of the state and is significant as the separatists have been refusing to recognise the government in the state.
The development has taken Hurriyat Conference leaders by surprise, with the chairman of conglomerate Mirwaiz Umer Farooq saying he was not aware of the meeting. "We will look into it," he added.
"We met the Governor to register our protest against the state government's decision not to allow Muharram procession on traditional routes. It was purely a religious matter and nothing political," Hussain told PTI.
He said the party submitted a memorandum to Vohar stating that not allowing the Muharram procession was a "violation of human rights and interference in religious matters."
The 8th and 10th Muharram processions are not allowed by the government from traditional routes from civil lines area to downtown of the city since the eruption of militancy in early 1990.
