Senior lawyer Reyaz Ahmad Jan, who has resigned as Advocate General of Jammu and Kashmir barely three months after his appointment, today said he was "pushed to the wall" and that there was no "respect and regard" to the office he held.
"The respect and regard that should be given to the office of Advocate General was not there and, therefore, I submitted my resignation as I could not fulfil any duties that were to be assigned to me," he said today.
"Coalition politics may be the compulsion of the state government but my conscience did not allow me to continue," Jan said.
Practising with Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Jan was appointed as AG by the PDP-BJP government led by Mufti Mohamemd Sayeed on March 15 soon after it assumed power.
"The government had said it had appointed me as Advocate General purely on merit. But what unfolded thereafter was a different story altogether," he said.
Jan said the differences with the government started when legal officers were appointed without any consultations with the office of Advocate General.
He said he had taken up the issue with the government but was told that it would be an opportunity for him to train young lawyers.
"I accepted this and as a lawyer it was a privilege for me to train the new law officers. But the things did not stop here. There were many other issues and finally I found myself being pushed to wall," said the former top government law officer.
The state government yesterday appointed Jehangir Iqbal Ganaie as the new Advocate General of the state.
