"Over 25 of our cultural icons have returned the (Sahitya Akademi) awards in protest against growing intolerance in the country and now civil society has decided to boycott CIC convention (tomorrow)," Kumar said in a series of tweets.
Slamming the central government for being "insensitive" by not reaching out to those writers/cultural icons returning their awards, he lamented that the Narendra Modi government was finding fault with them instead of pro-actively assuaging their fears.
"The insensitivity of ruling class and their efforts to undermine basic ethos and values of our country is extremely worrying," Kumar said in a jibe.
At least 30 writers have returned Sahitya Akademi and other awards and a number of social activists, including Aruna Roy who was a member of the National Advisory Council during the UPA regime, has decided to boycott the annual Right to Information (RTI) convention to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister tomorrow.
