Dutta, Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Ranchi, was arrested late last night after Rs 3.7 crore in cash was allegedly recovered from his house by the agency during searches.
"The arrested accused was produced today in the court of Special Judge, Ranchi, and remanded to four days police custody," a press release issued by the CBI said.
The searches were conducted at 23 locations, including 18 in Kolkata and five in Ranchi, after filing an FIR over corruption charges against Dutta and others, it said.
The CBI has registered the case against Dutta, another Income Tax officer (name withheld by the agency), six private individuals and other unknown public servants and government employees on the allegations of criminal conspiracy, illegal gratification and criminal misconduct, it said.
Dutta allegedly took huge illegal gratification from some businessmen through a chartered accountant to get the income tax assessment files of different assesses transfered from Kolkata/Hazaribagh to Ranchi, the agency's spokesperson R K Gaur had said.
