The J & K election authority today sought a report from District Magistrate of Rajouri over an alleged violation of the model code of conduct by the state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
"We have sought a report from District Magistrate of Rajouri in connection with a statement by Omar. Once we receive the report, it would be sent to Election Commission of India for further action", a senior official of Jammu and Kashmir election department told PTI.
In a written complaint, district president of J&K National Panther Party (JKNPP) Rajesh Sharma has alleged that Omar violated the Model Code of Conduct at Rajouri by making announcement that Pahari-speaking community will be provided a Scheduled Tribe status by the coalition government before the next assembly elections, by the end of this year.
JKNPP has filed a complaint of violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) against Omar with the election office, the official said.
Sharma has demanded action against the chief minister in this regard.
Jammu and Kashmir has over 20 lakh Paharis, who inhabit Rajouri and Poonch districts (in Jammu province) and Uri Karnah and Kupwara districts (in Kashmir province).
Saying that National Conference is conscious and aware of the demands of the people of the Rajouri and Poonch areas and commitments made in the party manifesto of 2008, Omar on Thursday pledged to fulfil all the promises including that of giving Paharis their due right without affecting the reservation already provided to the Scheduled Tribes.
Addressing public meetings at Rajouri, Omar said the state's coalition government was looking up to the union government to take care of the interests of the Paharis but since that could not happen for some reason, the party will fulfill the commitments it has made in the manifesto to the Paharis before the end of state government's present term.
