Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar today made a strong pitch for separate criteria for development and environment protection in Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-hit districts.
In a series of tweets after Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh met him, Javadekar also advocated for giving benefits to states for their environment protection efforts and said those having higher forest cover should not penalized.
The Environment Minister also had a meeting with Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar earlier from whom he recieved "innovative suggestions" and they are learnt to have discussed issues arising from the ban on mining activities within a kilometre of national parks and sanctuaries amongst others.
"Assured all possible help and assistance for development & environment protection to the CM of Chhattisgarh," Javadekar said in the micro-blogging website Twitter.
"LWE districts need to have separate criterias for development and Environment protection," he said.
In another tweet, he added "the states with higher forest cover should not be penalized; they shud be benefitted for their environment protection efforts."
Javadekar also strongly pitched for developing a mechanism which will ensure that all the guidelines issued by the Centre for protecting the environment can be implemented properly.
"We should evolve a mechanism to ensure that the Centre's guidelines for environment protection to be implemented properly", he tweeted.
The Environment Minister also advocated taking the states along as a "family" as far as development and environment protection were concerned and said his ministry will "look forward to similar meetings wih other state govts to resolve issues" on environment.
"We are not for 'WE Vs They' for Centre-State issues. We consider 'We are FAMILY' for development & Environment protection," he said.
Parrikar meanwhile asked the Centre to help resolve all the key environment issues related to mining.
