On September 24, the Madras High Court dispensed with the appearance of Jayalalithaa and Sasikala in the income tax returns case at the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court (economic offences) here.
On September 18, the ACMM court had asked Jayalalithaa and Sasikala to appear before it "without fail" on October 1 in the tax returns case.
Madras High Court Judge KBK Vasuki also directed the income tax authorities to dispose of the compounding applications filed by Jayalalithaa and Sasikala within six weeks and held that the trial in the case could however continue.
The Special Public Prosecutor, however, strongly opposed the petitions and wanted completion of trial on time in compliance with an order of the Supreme Court.
The magistrate posted the matter to October 16 for hearing and noted that the Madras High Court had dispensed with the personal appearance of Jayalalithaa and Sasikala.
"The case could proceed only if the accused are present. The matter is adjourned to October 16," he said in his order.
