Following RJD chief Lalu Prasad's claim that the Centre is doing away with 27 per cent quota for OBCs in recruitment of professors in central universities, JD(U) leader Shyam Rajak alleged that "this is the first step" towards "ending reservation for the underprivileged".
"RSS' 'Manuvadi agenda' has started through the letter (by UGC on June 3) to central universities to do away with 27 per cent reservation to OBCs in appointment of professors and associate professors," he alleged.
"This is the first step in the direction of ending reservation for the underprivileged sections of the society," the deputy leader of Bihar Legislative Assembly claimed, adding, "After this, gradually the NDA government will end reservation for the SCs & STs."
"This reflects the intention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP towards the Dalits and backwards. The PM and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat are trying to befool the Dalits by garlanding the statue of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar," Rajak, a prominent Dalit leader in JD(U) said.
He called upon Dalits and backwards across the country to "join hands in launching a country-wide agitation against the NDA government on the issue".
However, a senior UGC official in Delhi clarified that as per the norms established in 2007, 27 per cent reservation for OBC candidates in faculty jobs has been allowed at entry level and emphasised, "There has been no change in reservation policy."
The June 3 letter said that in case of OBCs, 27 per cent quota in teaching positions is applicable at the level of Assistant Professor only. This prompted Prasad to launch an attack on the NDA government claiming it was trying to undo reservation.
