Delvay Rawlins hit a patient century, while Will Jacks scored a well-made half-ton as England U-19 team recovered from a disastrous start and reached 243 for five on the first day of the second Junior Test match against India here today.
Rawlins 124 (16x2, 2x6) and Jacks 66 (10x4) shared an unbeaten sixth wicket stand of 131 runs to help stabilise England's first innings at the VCA Stadium at Jamtha near here.
The visitors, batting first, were struggling at one for the loss of three wickets early in the day before Rawlins and Jacks studied the ship with controlled aggression and fluent stroke play.
Openers Henrey Brooks (1) and Max Holden (0) went cheaply and one down George Bartlett (0) also did not bother the scorers. Rishabh Bhagat 2/39 and Kanish Seth 1/54 accounted for these wickets.
However, Rawlins, in company of Ollie Pope (42), partially restored the innings with a 4th wicket stand of 98 to enable England reach 99 before the latter fell to Harsh Tyagi.
He was soon followed by Evan woods (06) as the visitors reeled at 112 for five with Indian bowlers dominating the proceedings.
Rawlins, in company of Jacks, slowly resurrected the English innings with some determined batting display to bring their side to some safety.
Rawlins, in the process, completed a well-crafted century, while Jacks made a defiant unbeaten half century. Both were batting when the stumps were drawn for the day.
Indian bowlers, who made some early inroads, could not extend their dominance in the face of English defiance later in the day.
Brief score: England 1st innings: 243 for 5 off 90 over - Rawlins batting at 124, Jacks batting at 66; Rishabh Bhagat 2/39.
