Joan River died aged 81 on September 4, eight days after she was rushed to hospital following cardiac and respiratory arrest during a throat surgery, said The Hollywood Reporter.
Though there are other male and female comedians being considered for the part too, Griffin, 53, is said to be ahead of all in the race. The network E! earlier announced that the will continue without Rivers.
"We decided, with Melissa Rivers' blessing, that Joan would have wanted the franchise to continue. Fashion Police will return in 2015 commencing with Golden Globes coverage on Monday, January 12," it stated earlier this month.
