Kerala State Human Rights Commission today suo motu registered a case against the state jail department for allegedly allowing beedi tycoon Mohammed Nisham, convicted for ramming his luxury hummer and killing a security guard, to use mobile phones inside Kannur prison.
Taking note of media reports in this regard, the commission also directed the Inspector General of the Prison to probe and file a comprehensive report within a month.
The case will be taken up at the sitting of the commission in November at Kannur, Commission Acting Chairperson P Mohandas said.
Media reports had earlier stated that Nisham was using two mobile phones from inside the prison and was in constant touch with his wife and business associates.
His two brothers had lodged a complaint with Thrissur Rural SP stating that they had been threatened by Nisham. A case has been registered and investigations were on.
Prisons DIG had stated that Nisham had not made any calls using mobile phones from the jail, but had made two calls while in transit to Bengaluru for court appearance on October 20.
Three policemen who had accompanied him, have since been suspended.
