The plant, which started generating electricity today, is a major milestone in Indo-Russian nuclear cooperation.
Rosatom, or Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation, helped build the reactors for the Kudankulam plant.
Describing the plant as one of the world's most modern and safe ones, Rosatom said, "The plant has been built with additional safety measures keeping in mind (examples) like Japan's tsunami-hit Fukushima-1."
The first of the two Kudankulam nuclear plant units had attained criticality in July. The second unit at the facility is also almost ready for operations, Rosatom said.
