Light rain arrested the soaring mercury in the northern states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
The maximum temperature dropped by four notches in Delhi and settled at 35.2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded at 21.8, six notches below the season's average. The city gauged 24 mm of rainfall till 5.30 pm.
Heavy showers led to landslides in eastern Mizoram which cut off Champhai, a town on the Indo-Myanmar border, from the rest of the country.
The southwest monsoon advanced into the remaining parts of Odisha, triggering heavy rain in many areas.
A low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood now lies over southwest Bangladesh, the MeT office said.
Bihar's districts of Sirmari, Bakhtiarpur, Gaunaha, Madhepura, Saharsa, Sabour, Murliganj, Parbatta, Triveniganj and Supaul welcomed monsoon in the state.
The heat subsided in Punjab and Haryana, where the maximum temperature was recorded between 30-40 degrees Celsius at most of the places.
Residents heaved a sigh of relief in Rajasthan as rain kept the mercury in check in Jaipur, Bikaner and Bharatpur divisions.
The weatherman has predicted heavy rain in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Goa, Vidarbha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.
