The lawyers of six district courts in Delhi today decided to continue till May 6 their ongoing strike against the delay in tabling in Parliament an amended bill to enhance pecuniary jurisdiction of trial courts here.
The coordination committee of all district courts bar associations said that lawyers today met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and he has assured them that the bill will be brought in the current session of Parliament.
Advocate Sanjeev Nasiar, Convenor of the coordination committee, said they have postponed today's protest march to Parliament.
"Coordination committee members today met the Home Minister who assured that the bill would be passed in Parliament on May 5. In this background, we have postponed the 'chakka jam' protest which was scheduled for today and have extended the strike till May 6," Nasiar said.
Advocate R K Wadhwa, Chairman of the committee, said the lawyers have decided to extend the strike from May 2 to May 6.
"The union Home Minister has assured us that the bill will be passed on May 5. So, we have decided to continue our strike till May 6," Wadhwa said.
Lawyers of all the six district courts -- Tis Hazari, Patiala House, Karkardooma, Rohini, Saket and Dwarka -- are on strike since April 22 against the delay in enhancing the pecuniary jurisdiction.
The srike has hit judicial work in all district courts since April 22.
The lawyers' body said that the full bench of Delhi High Court had recommended to the central government that pecuniary jurisdiction of trial courts here be enhanced from existing Rs 20 lakh to Rs 2 crore, but nothing has been done till date.
