'Girls' may be one of the most popular shows on HBO but its creator Lena Dunham reveals she was once fired by the network before finally working her way back.
Dunham was working on Kate Winslet starrer mini-series 'Mildred Pierce' when she was let off in 2011.
"I got fired off the one day I did. Fired might be a rough word but I got sweetly dismissed," Dunham said in an interview with Grantland's Bill Simmons.
The actress played a nurse set in the period drama, but she apparently did not prepare well for the role.
"I didn't practice. I looked over the script with my mom and since the project takes place in the '30s I was like, 'Am I supposed to do any kind of accent?' My mom was like, 'They are hiring you to be you. Just go for it.'
"You could just see everybody's face drop. It was like Ricky Gervais in Extras," Dunham said, adding director Todd Haynes, "could not have been sweeter" about letting her go.
A year later Dunham was back on top with Girls.
