Opposition parties in the Maharashtra legislative assembly today strongly objected to the BJP-led state government's decision to cancel a discussion over the allegations of corruption against a Parbhani-based sugar mill.
"Gangakhed Sugar and Energy Ltd is found to have availed loan worth Rs 328 crore in the names of the farmers without their consent. We want a discussion on this issue, as it smacks of corruption. The government should not cancel the discussion," Congress leader and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said.
"This is the last week of the monsoon session (of the assembly) and opposition leaders have the right to submit proposals of their interest. We strongly object to the state decision of the government to cancel the (discussion on the) topic," he added.
However, parliamentary affairs minister Girish Bapat objected to Chavan's demand.
"The leaders of opposition have demanded discussion on around 10 issues. There isn't enough time and the House has many other procedures to complete, therefore the government has decided to cancel discussion on the issue," Bapat said.
Speaker Subhash Sabne then suggested that the ruling as well as the opposition party leaders should first hold talks and finalise the topics to be discussed in the House.
However, discussion on the sugar mill topic was eventually cancelled.
