West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today offered job for one of the family members of a youth who's alleged custodial death recently sparked protests at Anara railway colony in Purulia district.
Announcing a Homeguard's job for one member of the family, Banerjee said a compensation of Rs 2 lakh was also extended to the victim's family from the Chief Minister's relief fund.
"The family is very poor and the victim has two sisters. One of them will get appointment as Homeguard. An order has been issued today in this regard," she said here.
"An inquiry into the case is going on. The culprits must be punished. I am always against lock-up death and even organised movement against it earlier," Banerjee said.
Residents of the Anara railway colony earlier claimed that Eric Soren (20) was picked up by the police on the night of September 23 in connection with an incident of theft.
Soren's family members were informed the next day by the police that he has been admitted to the Raghunathpur state general hospital as he was ill.
When his parents and relatives reached the hospital, they found Eric dead.
"My son was picked up by the police and was beaten to death," Eric's father Mahendra Kumar Soren had alleged after filing an FIR with the Para police station.
Additional Superintendent of Police Dhritiman Bhattacharaya said an assistant sub-inspector Pankaj Gupta had been suspended on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim's father and investigation was on.
